Lunar Glow Blog Hop
I’m so excited to finally share today’s project with you!
I’ve joined forces with seven other talented fabric artists to help Claudia Porter celebrate the release of her latest fabric line, Lunar Glow, with Island Batik. We’re marking the occasion by participating in the Lunar Glow Blog Hop—and today is my day to showcase what I created with this stunning collection!
Introducing “Happy Days”
For this hop, I designed a quilt I’m calling Happy Days. The name felt just right—this quilt truly makes me smile every time I look at it.
The design is a playful spin on the classic Dutchman quilt block. Instead of traditional flying geese soaring in their expected direction, I decided to turn things around a bit—literally! My flying geese are headed in a different direction, giving the quilt a fresh, modern feel while still honoring a timeless block structure.
I don’t work with flying geese as often as some other blocks, but this project reminded me just how dynamic and versatile they can be. By simply shifting orientation, the entire movement of the quilt changes. It feels lively, almost as if the geese are dancing across the surface.
Falling in Love with Batiks
I have to admit—I don’t work with batik fabrics all the time. But every time I do, I remember why I love them so much.
The colors in the Lunar Glow collection are absolutely rich and luminous. There’s a depth to batiks that’s hard to replicate with other fabric styles. The saturated hues and layered dye techniques give every piece a sense of movement and texture—even in solid areas.
One of my favorite things about batik fabrics is how the front and back of the same square can have a totally different look. That subtle variation adds interest and dimension to the quilt top. It’s almost like getting two fabrics in one! When cutting and piecing, I found myself appreciating the little surprises each piece revealed.
Design Choices & Color Play
For Happy Days, I focused on letting the fabric shine. The geometry of the flying geese provides structure, while the batiks bring the energy. I carefully arranged the colors to create balance—alternating lighter and darker tones so the directional movement would stand out without overwhelming the eye.
The contrast between the bold, glowing hues and the crisp lines of the block creates a design that feels both classic and contemporary.
