Old Maid's Puzzle Quilt Block | Mosaics & More BOM Month 3

Old Maid’s Puzzle is one of those classic quilt blocks that looks far more complicated than it actually is — and that’s exactly what makes it so satisfying to sew.

At first glance, the design might seem tricky. But like most quilt blocks, it becomes much more approachable once you break it down into individual units and work through each step in order. This is one of the core skills the Mosaics & More Block of the Month program is designed to build: the ability to look at a complex block and trust the process.

If you enjoy blocks with energy, rotation, and a satisfying geometric payoff, this block is for you.

About the Mosaics & More 2026 Block of the Month

The Mosaics & More BOM is a year-long quilt-along designed for beginner and confident beginner quilters who want to:

  • Strengthen core piecing skills

  • Work with traditional blocks in a modern, polished way

  • Build a quilt one manageable block at a time

  • Learn techniques they can reuse in future quilts

Each month introduces a new block along with specific techniques that build on the months before it.

Members get access to all past blocks, so you can join anytime and catch up at your own pace.

Month 3 Focus: The Old Maid’s Puzzle Quilt Block

The Old Maid’s Puzzle is a classic traditional block with a design that creates a strong sense of rotation and movement across the quilt surface. When multiples are sewn together, the secondary patterns that emerge are really striking — which is part of what makes this such a rewarding block to piece.

Rather than being intimidated by the finished look, this block teaches you to see construction in layers — breaking a complex design into simple, repeatable units.

Techniques highlighted in this block include:

  • Making and trimming half-square triangles for accuracy

  • Efficient HST construction using the eight-at-a-time method

  • Intentional fabric placement to maximize contrast and visual impact

These are techniques you’ll reach for again and again, in this quilt and every quilt after it.

Fabric & Color Palette

For Month 3, we’re continuing with Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids, keeping the quilt’s palette cohesive as it grows.

The featured colors in this block are:

  • Snow (white)

  • Raspberry Rose

This palette builds directly off Month 1 and Month 2, maintaining the visual continuity of the quilt while letting the Old Maid’s Puzzle design shine through strong contrast between light and dark fabrics.

How the Block Is Constructed

Old Maid’s Puzzle is made entirely from two shapes: half-square triangles (HSTs) and squares. That’s it. No unusual cuts, no specialty rulers — just two of the most fundamental units in quilting arranged to create the illusion of complexity.

The block is divided into four rows, each containing a mix of HSTs and plain squares positioned to build that characteristic rotational movement. Once your units are sewn and trimmed, it’s simply a matter of arranging them correctly and joining the rows.

Half-square triangles are made by sewing two contrasting fabric squares together on the diagonal, then pressing them open. At their most fundamental level, that’s all an HST is — two triangles of fabric joined at the long edge to create a square. It’s a technique you may already be comfortable with from earlier months, but if you’d like a deeper dive, I have a full blog post that walks you through how to make multiple HSTs at a time — a real time-saver when a block calls for several.

The key is making sure each HST is pressed and trimmed to the correct size before assembly.

The plain squares provide visual breathing room and anchor the HSTs in place. Fabric placement matters here — the contrast between your HST fabrics and your background squares is what makes the block’s design pop.
