I'm Tiffany Bynum, the designer and educator behind Straight Stitching. I design beginner-friendly quilt patterns based on traditional blocks, and I teach the techniques that make those blocks approachable for new quilters. My philosophy is simple: precision in the pattern, freedom in the making.
My Quilting Journey
I started quilting in 2022 with no formal training, no quilting mother or grandmother guiding me, just genuine curiosity and an unwarranted confidence that I could figure it out.
What I did bring to the table was 25 years managing complex technical programs in telecommunication and aerospace. I learned to think in systems, plan in phases, and solve problems before they become setbacks. When I started quilting, I realized those same skills were exactly what most quilting education was missing: structure, clarity, and a process you could trust.
That realization became Straight Stitching, a pattern and education brand built for quilters who want to do things right. My patterns are traditional in style, precise in design, and written so that every step is clear before you take it. My teaching is warm, methodical, and built around the idea that confidence comes from understanding, not just following along.
What I Specialize In
I focus on beginner and confident-beginner quilting, with a focus on traditional quilt blocks.
The techniques I teach most:
Half-square triangles (HSTs)
Flying geese
Strip piecing
Stitch-and-flip corners
Accurate piecing and pressing
Traditional blocks are the basis of my teaching because they give you skills that transfer to every quilt you'll ever make. Learn them well and the rest will follow.
My Design Philosophy
Every Straight Stitching pattern starts with the same questions: "Could a brand-new quilter successfully make this?" and “Does this design look interesting?”
If the answer is no to either of those questions, I go back to the drawing board.
I use EQ8 software to design my quilts, I type every word of my pattern instructions from scratch, and I draw every diagram. Then the pattern goes to a technical editor before going to a group of real quilters for testing before a single copy is ever sold.
That process matters to me because I know what it feels like to follow a pattern that doesn't quite make sense. I don't want that to be your experience. That's why every pattern I write is built to give you clear steps and then get out of your way. The precision belongs to the pattern. What you make with it is entirely yours.
How Every Pattern Is Made
Before any Straight Stitching pattern is published, it goes through this process:
Design and drafting in EQ8 software
Written instructions, composed word by word
Diagrams and technical illustrations created in Affinity
Technical editing review
Full testing round with quilters at multiple skill levels
Revisions based on real tester feedback
Final review before release
If a tester finds something confusing, I fix it. If the math isn't working, I fix that too. By the time a pattern reaches you, it has been made several times, checked, and corrected where needed.
