If you’re new to quilting and looking for easy flying geese quilt block instructions, you’re in the right place! Flying geese are classic, versatile units used in tons of quilt patterns—from star blocks to borders and everything in between.

In this step-by-step guide, I’ll show you how to make flying geese 4 at a time using the popular no-waste method. This is one of the best beginner quilting techniques for saving time, fabric, and stress!

Let’s dive in.

Flying Geese Quilt Block Materials

To make four flying geese units, here’s what you’ll need:

  • (1) large square – this is your geese fabric (the center triangle)

  • (4) small squares – these are your sky fabric (the sides)

How to Make Flying Geese Using the No-Waste Method

Step 1: Mark Your Sky Squares

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all four small squares. Use a chalk pencil or a water-soluble pen.

Step 2: Stitch First Set

Place two small squares on opposite corners of the large square (right sides together), aligning the marked lines to form a straight line across the center. Sew ¼ inch away from both sides of the marked line.

Cut along the drawn line to get two heart-shaped units.

Step 3: Add the Remaining Squares

Take the last two small squares and place one on each unit. Again, stitch ¼ inch from both sides of the marked line and cut along the line.

🎉 That’s it! You now have four flying geese quilt blocks ready to press and trim if needed.

Tips for Sewing Perfect Flying Geese

  • Press seams toward the sky triangles for less bulk.

  • Chain piece for faster assembly when making lots of blocks.

  • Match your colors for modern flying geese quilts or go scrappy for a fun, eclectic look.
