If you’re a beginner quilter looking for a simple but satisfying block to add to your quilting skills, you’ll love this one. The Courthouse Steps is a variation of the traditional Log Cabin quilt block, but with a twist—fabric strips are added in alternating pairs from the center square outward, creating a beautiful stair-step design.

🧵 Supplies You’ll Need:

  • 3.5" x 3.5" center square

  • 2" wide strips in increasing lengths (3.5", 6.5", 9.5", etc.)

  • Rotary cutter and mat

  • Sewing machine

  • Iron (and lots of pressing!)

  • Coordinating thread

🔥 Pro Tip for Quilters:

The Courthouse Steps block involves frequent pressing, so set up your iron close to your sewing machine to save time and energy. You’ll be going back and forth often!

🪡 Why This Block is Great for Beginners:

  • Repetitive structure helps reinforce sewing straight seams

  • Teaches accurate pressing for sharp, flat blocks

  • Builds confidence with piecing strip sets and keeping your block square

  • Offers tons of layout flexibility when assembling the final quilt!
