How to Make a Square in Square Quilt Block (2 Easy Methods!)
The Square in Square quilt block (sometimes called Diamond in a Square) is one of those classic quilt blocks that looks complicated—but it’s actually beginner-friendly once you know the tricks.
In this post, I’ll walk you through two different methods for making a Square in Square block. Both are simple, but each has its own advantages. You’ll also find a step-by-step video tutorial at the end so you can follow along in real time. 🧵
Why the Square in Square Block?
The Square in Square is a traditional block with endless possibilities. Use it as the centerpiece of a quilt, mix it into sampler projects, or repeat it for a bold geometric design. It’s also a great way to practice accurate piecing and keeping your blocks square.
Method 1: Traditional Piecing
The traditional method uses a center square framed by four triangles.
Steps:
Cut your center square to size (3-3/8 inches x 3-3/8 inches).
Cut two larger squares on the diagonal to make four triangles (2-7/8 inches x 2-7/8 inches).
Sew triangles to opposite sides of the square, press open.
Add the remaining triangles, press again.
Trim the block to the correct size.
Why use this method?
Accurate points.
True to the traditional quilting style.
Great practice for precision piecing.
Method 2: Stitch & Flip (Shortcut)
If you’re a beginner or just want a faster method, the stitch & flip technique is for you.
Steps:
Start with your center square (4-1/2 inches x 4-1/2 inches) and four smaller corner squares (2-1/2 inches x 2-1/2 inches).
Place a corner square right sides together, draw a diagonal line, and stitch along it.
Trim away the extra fabric, press open.
Repeat for all four corners.
Why use this method?
Quick and beginner-friendly.
No cutting triangles.
Great for chain piecing when making multiple blocks.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Traditional Piecing = accuracy and crisp points.
Stitch & Flip = speed and simplicity.
Both give you beautiful results, so it really comes down to personal preference.

Quilting Tip 💡
When trimming your block, always measure from the center out to keep everything square. A rotating cutting mat makes this step so much easier!
